3 Stretches to help you Touch Your Toes!

If you have been feeling stiff and you are finding it harder to do the things that you used to enjoy then these 3 poses are for you.

Taking care of your body and giving yourself 5 minutes a day to stretch isn’t something a lot of people think about. We push our bodies too much, we indulge, we sit around for a very long time, we pick up heavy children and expect no consequence. Or is that just me?

You can practise these exercises in just 5 minutes a day and I promise you that in just a week your body will be so grateful for it and you will be closer to your toes.

But remember to listen to your body, it’s not how deep you go into a pose that matters, it’s how your body feels in the pose. Go until there is a slight stretch, stop there and breathe. 

Let’s look at the poses

Forward Fold Crossed Legs

cross one leg behind the other, so that the outer edges of your feet are together, bend in the knees slightly, tilt your pelvis forward (stick your bum out) and fold forward. You can place your hands onto yoga blocks or a chair if your hands cannot reach the floor. Hold here for 10 long breaths. Repeat on the other side.

Supine Hamstring Stretch

Let gravity help you with this one. One leg stays bent on the floor (straighten it for a deeper stretch) and bring the other leg up in the air. Grab behind your thigh, keep your toes flexed and bring your leg towards your chest. Keep a bend in the knee if you need to. Find a slight stretch and take 10 long breaths here. Repeat on the other side.

Pyramid Pose

This is a great stretch for the hamstrings, take this one carefully. From standing, take one foot back a couple of feet and turn your foot outwards at a 45 degree angle. If you struggle with balance, separate your feet wider (not longer). Fold forward and either hold onto your leg or find your yoga blocks. Once you feel a stretch you can round the back and relax. Hold for 10 long breaths and repeat on the other side.
